Be Prepared….In Case You Have To Evacuate

Last year those of us in Colorado Springs saw first hand, how quickly a fire can spread with the Waldo Canyon Fire. It’s only May and we are already seeing wildfires in California that are destroying so many acres. There are other parts of the country suffering from floods, which is another concern here. Whether it’s a wildfire, flood, tornado, hurricane or any other natural disaster, time is of the essence if you have to evacuate. Here’s some great tips and lists on how to be prepared….

We have had so many fires already this year and summer has just begun…Yesterday, here in Colorado Springs, fire evacuations became a reality for a lot of folks.

When the threat of any disaster occurs, it can be hard to think of what you need to take. Here’s a list of things for you to consider….and if you keep your important documents together, it will be easier when you’re under pressure, to be able to grab them and go.

Items you might not think about that you might need are:

  • Phone chargers
  • Medications
  • Insurance information
  • Birth certificates
  • Passports
  • Mortgage info

If you have pets, make sure you have enough crates, food, etc. for them too. The American Red Cross suggests, when threatened with mandatory evacuations, you leave with enough supplies (including your medications) to last for 72 hours.

As we saw yesterday, sometimes the reverse 911 calls don’t reach everyone so if you have neighbors, especially elderly or sick neighbors, make sure you check in with them too so that they know what’s going on.

Our hearts go out to everyone this year who have suffered the loss of loved ones, homes, or property.

And if you want to volunteer or donate money, you can always do it through your local Red Cross….

And thanks to all our fire fighters!

Tammy’s Tip ‘O the Day

And seriously, DO NOT go towards the fires to get pictures, videos or just to watch. You add to the confusion, cars can cause traffic jams for those trying to evacuate and  can cause delays for emergency vehicles trying to respond.

We hope the fires are all contained soon with as little damage as possible!
