What Not to Buy New – Do You Agree?

We published a story earlier on what not to buy used (which I disagreed with some of the items). And this weekend I stumbled across another related article about what not to buy new.

Here’s a few suggestions on what NEVER to buy new.

  • Movies: I can personally say that almost all of our DVD’s are bought used and we’ve never had problems with them. You can find them at Blockbuster, thrift stores, garage sales and Craig’s list.
  • Jewelry: I bought a ring at a pawn shop years ago for about $60 and then had it appraised at a jewelry store…$180.00 is what it was appraised at and I still love that ring!
  • Autos: I’ve only bought a vehicle once that was brand, spanking new and you know what….for the price, it was probably one of my least favorite vehicles.
  • Pets: We get all our pets from the Humane Society.
  • Books: I very seldom buy new books.

Tammy’s Questions ‘O the Day:

What are some of your favorite items you never buy new?

We’d love to hear your input. Leave your comment below!

I basically never buy cookware new. My favorite find was a 17 piece set of SaladMaster cookware that would have cost me around $1200 which I got for $51. Later picked up the electric skillet for the set ( another $350) for $8.50. Did pay full price for a new cord for it…

I don’t tend to buy clothes new – I get them at Goodwill. And wood furniture, and cooking pots, etc. and drinking glasses, too. I have some lovely wine glasses with a pineapple on the delicate stem, so lovely. So, I am grateful to the people who donate to Goodwill and thrift stores so I can have decent clothes and home items. Thank you so much.

Janny…I’m with you about Goodwill shopping. Just bought a pair of jeans, some cool plates and books for the grandsons today. Your wine glasses sound great.

china! I’ve gotten Nortake & Mikasa, as well as other antique & priceless china @ the thrift store! Even if you don’t get a full set, it’s cool to mix patterns! I just try to keep the patterns in the same color scheme…and designer clothes, especially, formals that you will wear once!
Thanks for the jewelry idea…I’ve never been in a pawn shop, I’ll have to check that out..

Cindi…I so agree with you about the china and mixing the patterns. I do it all the time.
