Sweet Dollar Deals For Valentine’s Day…Great For Children, Co-Workers, or Parties

In a January 2014 poll conducted by the National Retail Federation, Americans said they would spend an average of $133.91 for Valentine’s Day; buying candy, cards, dinners, and gifts. An American Express Spending & Saving Tracker poll had a higher dollar result coming in at $213 as an average dollar amount spent. Out of that money spent, 21% goes towards children’s classmates, parties and teachers and 11% is spent on co-workers.

I don’t know about you but I simply don’t have a lot of extra money in my pockets after spending money for food, entertaining and gifts during the holiday season of Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. So for little Valentine treats for the grandsons and friends, I head to the Dollar Tree where I can pick up items for only a dollar. If you’re a room mother for your child’s class, like to hand out goodies at work, have a Valentine party planned, or want to get crafty and make something for your sweetheart, you can find plenty of items to choose from.

*Seasonal items tend to go fast at the Dollar Tree so the sooner you shop, the more you’ll have to choose from.

These box sets of little Valentine cards have been around forever and you can find them at the grocery store, drug store, and large discount stores. They are all pretty much the same so why spend more money than you need to? The Dollar Tree has a huge variety to choose from all for a dollar.

Items I really dislike spending a lot of money on are paper goods like napkins and paper plates. They can be expensive, especially when you pick up decorative ones versus the plain old white. For any party or get-together I always buy my paper products at the Dollar Tree where I can find items to match any occasion. Here you get 18 plates and 18 napkins for a dollar each. Several patterns to choose from too. Perfect for a classroom party or to share Valentine treats at work.

Stickers are popular with younger kids. With this package of various size heart stickers, you can come up with fun but affordable crafts to make (100 per package.) And if you’re handing out little gifts to your child’s classmates or friends, these stickerbox Valentines (8 stickers per box,) are ideal.

A couple of years ago I made my husband a card out of poster board and wrote my message using the candy hearts from a Sweethearts box. It was kind of dorky but fun. These are the exact same Sweethearts that are sold at every store and I saw this same set of 4 boxes being sold for $1.99 to $2.50 at other stores. So whether you’re using these to hand out for treats or perhaps you’re own creative craft, why pay more?

A few more items you can hand out or fill a treat bag with…

These Valentine treat bags are great for filling with homemade goodies for co-workers, classroom or home parties, and/or for your own kids or grandkids. For less sugary snacks, fill with popcorn or trail mix. I’ll stuff some of these with various items like the pencils and stickers for our grandsons. There were various patterns and styles to choose from.

No matter who you might be giving a Valentine card to this year, you’ll be able to find the perfect one for only a dollar at the Dollar Tree. I found a huge selection and the cards themselves didn’t look or feel “cheap.”

And just because…I mean, who doesn’t need a solar dancing devil?

And then there are chocolates…whether for a sweetheart, teacher, child, parent, or friend. And seriously, who needs a huge box of sweets, especially after indulging over the past holiday season!

You can of course pick up similar items at other stores but why pay more? I saw a lot of these items on sale at other stores for $1.99 which still isn’t a ton of money but it does add up. If you buy 10 items, which is easy to do between cards and candy, you could save at least $10 just by shopping at a dollar store…for the very same or similar items.
