Hairdresser Loyalty….What Do You Think?

I have a friend who went to her regular hair salon but her normal hairdresser was out, so she had someone else cut and style her hair. She was SO happy with the results, much happier than she had been with any of her previous cuts but now she’s worried about her next appointment and who she should use. And just fyi, in addition to a style she liked better, the price was less than her “regular” hairdresser. Have you been in that situation before? It’s one thing to change salons, where you won’t see your previous hairdresser but how do you handle changing hairdressers at the same salon? Do you feel you need to say anything or explain why you’re switching to someone new? I have another  friend who went to the same hairdresser for three years, even though she didn’t really like the haircuts and styles she was receiving. Why, I asked her and she said, “she didn’t want to hurt her feelings.” When she finally did make the break, she couldn’t have been happier and wished she had done it sooner. If you’re been in this situation, what did you do? If you’re a hairdresser, what would you like a customer to tell you if she’s not happy? I told my friend to schedule her appointments on her old hairdresser’s day off but that doesn’t seem right somehow. What do you think?

I’ve been looking for responses to this, but haven’t seen any. I’m in this particular boat myself and I’m really interested to see what others have to say.

Tammy…I thought we’d get some comments too…was hoping to get some opinions! Anyone been in this situation?

Hey Tammy! I’m a brand new follower of 719 woman and LOVE your site! Never been to Colorado (I live in White Rock, B.C. Canada). Tammy, you are so “down to earth” and natural and I love the way you keep it real – And – I really appreciate your budget friendly tips!

So that’s my little introduction, now on to the topic:
This is a subject that hits home for me because I have had several gals at my salon cut my hair. It’s one of those “budget friendly” first come, first serve places. Most times I have just gone with whichever operator is available next, and sometimes I have asked for someone by name. However, I’ve finally settled on one named Kelly who seems to be just right for me, and I ask for her all the time now. I did feel guilty and a bit embarrassed at first when some of the other gals who have cut my hair before (and with whom I was satisfied with) become available and then realize that I am waiting for Kelly. I’m the type that values the feelings of others and hate the idea of hurting or insulting them. But now I’m thinking that perhaps my fear of hurting their feelings was greater than what was the actual case. They might wonder why I’ve settled on Kelly now, but I’m sure that such things come with the territory of the job and that they find a way to accept it okay. I’m sure they understand that when it comes to hair, we women are always looking for something new and “the perfect cut” for us can change at a moment’s notice – and sometimes it can be found with a change of stylist.

So, I think we may be fretting it more than we need to. It would be interesting if some hairdressers would write in with their perspective on it too.

(By the way, is there a meaning behind the numbers 7 – 1 – 9??)

Hey Colleen…First of all thanks! Love your insight and I agree….hate to hurt other’s feelings but perhaps sometimes we’re too focused on something “small” that perhaps isn’t really “important” or that others are even thinking about (like with who we’re seeing at the salon.) Love your attitude! I was hoping to get some input from someone who actually works in a salon and has had this happen to them. Do they care? Anyway, thanks for your comment, I hear Canada is beautiful and the 719 stands for our area code here.

Oh – I get it! Thanks, Tammy. I hope someone in the industry contributes as well. It would be so much better to get their perspective.

I stumbled upon your website quite by accident, but am so glad I did. I enjoy your cooking segments and all your tips – and your red wine looks delish! Thanks for doing what you do – brightening the lives of other gals in places and in ways you might never have expected!

Wishing you many blessings! ~ Colleen
